How to light a Hampton Bay patio heater

The stainless and black heaters light with a push-button igniter. These are their manuals’ steps.

Open

Open the tank

Turn the gas cylinder valve on.

High

Knob to HIGH

Press and turn the control knob 90 degrees counterclockwise.

Spark

Press the igniter

Hold the knob in and press until the burner lights. Release about 10 seconds later.

Low

Warm up on LOW

Leave it on LOW for 5 minutes or more, then set your heat.

If the flame goes out, turn the heater off and wait at least 5 minutes before you try again. The manual warns against holding the knob in for more than 10 seconds before it lights.

Hampton Bay patio heater won’t stay lit

The troubleshooting table in the Hampton Bay manuals lists these causes. Start with the tank.

Won’t light or stay lit

The control knob isn’t at ON, the gas pressure is low, the cylinder has frosted over, or something is blocking the orifice.

Try a full cylinder, or let a frosted one warm up.

Leak test first

Low flame

Below 40 degrees F with the tank under a quarter full, pressure drops. Swap in a full cylinder.

The manual’s fix: a full cylinder.

Heater sizes

Thick black smoke

Something is blocking the burner. Turn it off, let it cool, clear the blockage and clean the burner.

Don’t run it while it smokes.

Get the manual

Carbon on the reflector

Dirt or film on the reflector and burner screen. Clean both once the heater is cold.

Turn the heater off first.

Parts and help

Placement, leak test and storage

Three things the manual asks for every season.

Give it room

Keep anything that burns at least 3 ft. from the sides and 3 ft. above the top. The black 55,000 BTU manual asks for 3.3 ft. at the sides.

Use it outdoors only.

Check your manual

Leak test

Mix one part dish soap to three parts water. Brush it on the hose and regulator joints, then open the tank. Bubbles mean a leak.

Close the tank, tighten and test again.

Troubleshooting

Store it right

Knob off, tank disconnected, heater upright and out of the weather. Never keep the cylinder indoors or in an enclosed space.

Keep the tank out of direct sun.
