Hampton Bay Remote Reset

A Hampton Bay remote reset means pairing the remote and the fan’s receiver again. Older remotes pair by matching tiny DIP switches; newer ones learn the fan with a button. Both take a few minutes.

Hampton Bay DIP switch location and settings

The remote and the receiver each have a set of DIP switches. When both sets match, they talk. These steps follow the Mena fan’s guide.

Remote switches

Press the arrow on the battery cover and slide it off. The switches sit inside. Slide each one up or down.

The factory setting is all up.

Try the switch matcher

Receiver switches

Turn the power off at the breaker. On the Mena, the receiver’s switches sit behind a hole closed by a rubber stopper. Set them the same as the remote.

On older fans the receiver sits up in the canopy.

Find the receiver

Close up and test

Fit a fresh battery, the A23 12V on the Mena, and put the cover back. Push the rubber stopper over the receiver’s switches and restore power.

Stay within 10 to 20 feet when you test.

Still not working?

Two fans close together answering one remote? Give each fan its own switch pattern, remote and receiver alike.

Pair a Hampton Bay remote with the LEARN button

Newer Hampton Bay fans learn their remote. These steps follow the Gazebo IV guide.

Power

Only this fan on

Turn power off to every other fan nearby, then turn this fan’s power on.

60 sec

Press and hold LEARN

Within 60 seconds of power on. The button is in the battery compartment.

Blink

Watch the fan

The light blinks and the blades start to spin. Some fans blink three times.

Done

Release the button

The fan now takes commands from that remote. Test each button.

The Gazebo IV remote also has a frequency switch: 1, the factory setting, picks a random frequency so nearby fans stay separate; 0 is a common frequency for all.

How to reset a Hampton Bay ceiling fan remote

There’s no reset button on the remote. Resetting means pairing again.

LEARN button remote

Run the learning steps again. The Gazebo IV guide calls this resetting the transmitter, and it’s the fix when the remote stops working.

Remotes come paired from the factory, so you only need this if one stops.

Learning steps

DIP switch remote

Pick a new pattern on the remote and set the receiver to match. Changing the code also stops a neighbor’s remote from running your fan.

Four switches give 16 possible codes.

Switch steps

Extra remotes

Some newer Hampton Bay fans take up to three paired remotes. Pair each one with the learning steps.

Order extra remotes from customer service.

Customer service

Paired but still not responding?

Run through these before you buy anything.

Battery

Fit a new one of the type in the cover: A23 12V or two AAA on recent remotes.

Wall switch

Leave it on. The receiver needs power to hear the remote.

No wall dimmer

Don’t wire the fan to a variable speed wall control. Guides warn against it.

Receiver

Still dead? Replace remote and receiver together with a kit.

See Hampton Bay ceiling fan remotes for replacement kits like the 70830 and 98130, which come with their own receiver.

Hampton Bay remote pairing questions

How do I reset my Hampton Bay ceiling fan remote?

Pair it again. On a LEARN button remote, turn the fan’s power on and within 60 seconds hold LEARN until the light blinks and the blades spin. On a DIP switch remote, set the remote and receiver switches to the same new pattern.

Where are the DIP switches on a Hampton Bay fan?

On the remote, inside the battery cover. On the fan, on the receiver: on the Mena they sit behind a rubber stopper, and on many older fans the receiver is up in the canopy. Turn the power off before you reach for them.

What should the DIP switches be set to?

Anything, as long as the remote and receiver match. The factory setting on the Mena is all up. Use a different pattern for each fan in the house.

Is there a reset button on a Hampton Bay remote?

Not as such. Learning remotes have a LEARN button in the battery compartment, which you use to pair the remote again.

How do I program a new Hampton Bay remote?

Replacement kits come with their own receiver, so you install the receiver in the fan and the pair is ready. Follow the kit’s instructions for setting its code.

Why does my remote control two fans at once?

Both fans share the same code. Give one fan a different DIP switch pattern, or on a learning remote pair each fan with only that fan’s power on.

Can I use more than one remote on one fan?

Some newer Hampton Bay fans take up to three paired remotes. Extra remotes are ordered through Hampton Bay customer service at 1-855-HD-HAMPTON.

How far away does the remote work?

The Mena guide gives a normal range of 10 to 20 feet. The 70830 replacement kit is rated to 30 feet.
