Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Installation
Hampton Bay ceiling fan installation takes a fan-rated box, the right mount and about eight steps from bracket to blades. These follow Hampton Bay’s own Use and Care Guides, plus how to take an old fan down.
Before you install a Hampton Bay fan
What the Pre-installation pages ask you to check.
Tools
What you need
Phillips and flat screwdrivers, step ladder, wire stripper, electrical tape, adjustable wrench.
35 lb
Fan-rated box
UL Listed and marked FOR FAN SUPPORT. Never a plastic box.
7 ft
Blade height
At least 7 feet from the blades’ trailing edge to the floor.
18°
Sloped ceilings
The most slope the Glendale III allows. Steeper may need a longer downrod.
Replacing a light with no joist above it? The guides call for a hanger bar, sold separately. Turn the power off at the breaker before you start; the wall switch isn’t enough.
Hampton Bay fan mounting options
Most Hampton Bay fans hang one of three ways. Your guide says which yours supports.
Downrod
The standard mount. The hanger ball on the downrod sits in the mounting bracket, and the fan hangs below the ceiling.
Higher ceilings take a longer extension downrod.
Downrod lengthsClose to ceiling
For low ceilings, the fan mounts tight to the ceiling without the downrod. On the original Gazebo this puts the blades about 9 in. below the ceiling.
Hugger fans are built only for this.
Hampton Bay fansSloped ceiling
The downrod mount works on sloped ceilings up to the angle your guide allows, 18 degrees on the Glendale III.
Check blade clearance from the ceiling on the high side.
Tri-mount Gazebo IIIHow to install a Hampton Bay ceiling fan
The order Hampton Bay guides follow, shown here from the Glendale III.
Off
Cut the power
At the breaker or fuse box, then confirm the wires are dead.
Bracket
Mount the bracket
Pass the house wires through it and screw it to the fan-rated box.
Hang
Hang the motor
Seat the hanger ball in the bracket. The motor rests on the hook while you wire.
Wire
Make connections
Black and blue to hot, white to white, green to ground, with taped wire nuts.
Canopy
Close the canopy
Lift it to the bracket and secure it with its four screws.
Blades
Attach the blades
Remove the rubber packing mounts first. Three screws per blade, center screw tightened first.
Light
Fit the light kit
Plug white to white and blue to black, then three screws. Glass goes on snug.
Test
Power on and check
Run each speed and the light. Expect a 24-hour break-in for noise.
Wiring a separate light switch? Blue goes to the second hot wire instead. See the Hampton Bay ceiling fan wiring diagram.
How to remove a Hampton Bay ceiling fan
Removal is installation in reverse. Lightening the fan first makes the ladder work safer.
Lighten
Strip it down
Power off at the breaker. Remove bulbs, glass, the light kit and the blades.
Drop
Lower the canopy
Loosen the canopy screws and slide it down. Support the motor from here on.
Unwire
Disconnect
Undo the wire nuts and note which house wire went where.
Lift
Lift it off
Lift the hanger ball out of the bracket, then unscrew the bracket if needed.
Glass shades that turned on clockwise come off counterclockwise. The Gazebo IV’s twist-n-lock shade also turns off.
Hampton Bay installation questions
Where are the Hampton Bay ceiling fan installation instructions?
In the fan’s Use and Care Guide. Search the model number on homedepot.com and open Info and Guides, or see Hampton Bay ceiling fan manuals. Some product pages add a visual installation guide.
What kind of box does a Hampton Bay fan need?
A UL Listed outlet box marked FOR FAN SUPPORT, able to hold at least 35 lb. Hampton Bay guides say not to use a plastic box.
How high should a Hampton Bay fan hang?
At least 7 feet from the floor to the trailing edge of the blades. Use a close-to-ceiling mount on low ceilings and a longer downrod on high ones.
How do I remove a Hampton Bay ceiling fan?
Turn the power off at the breaker, remove the bulbs, glass, light kit and blades, loosen and lower the canopy, disconnect the wires and lift the hanger ball out of the bracket.
How do I take the light cover off a Hampton Bay fan?
Let it cool with the power off. Shades that thread on turn off counterclockwise; others are held by small screws on the fitter. Support the glass as it comes loose.
Can I install a Hampton Bay fan on a sloped ceiling?
Yes, with the downrod mount, up to the angle your guide allows. The Glendale III allows 18 degrees, and steeper ceilings may need a longer downrod.
Why is my new fan noisy?
Hampton Bay guides allow a 24-hour break-in. If it’s still noisy, tighten the housing, blade arm and glass screws and make sure the canopy doesn’t touch the ceiling.
Do I need an electrician?
If the box isn’t fan rated, there’s no ground, or you’re unsure of the wiring, yes. A fan hangs and moves, so the box and connections have to be right.
